  VABAR’S ASSOCIATION IN AYYAPPA STORY

Vabar, a Muslim by religion was a charitable robber in his early life. He had his tent for him and his men on the way to Ayyappan temple. He used to rob the people and distributed it to his men. Kings were not able to stop or control him. They appealed to Lord. Lord Ayyappa warned Vabar and threatened to kill him. Vabar replied saying that the Lord was but a child and therefore he could not kill him in a fight. When Ayyappa tried to kill Vabar, he asked Ayyappa who would take care of his men after his death. Lord said that it would be his responsibility and promised safety to them.

As agreed between them, a mosque was built there. Lord Ayyappa told Vabar that His devotees would visit the mosque also where they would be checked by Vabar as an inspecting officer and allow them to proceed after a check up He also gave powers to Vabar to check the pilgrims of their purity in the fasting and if found wanting, Vabar could send them back. Also young girls should be stopped at the mosque itself. Vabar is still believed to be checking the pilgrims. This is a mosque where Vibhuti the sacred ash is offered to the devotees as Prasad. Devotees can proceed only after getting the Prasad.
