  Devotees perform abisheks and archanas to presiding deity and offer vastras to Lord and Mother and red flower garlands to Mother Gomathi Amman. 
    
 Greatness Of Temple:
     
  According to Sthala Purana-local history of the place that Lord Satya Vakeeswarar temple here had some relationships with the Satyavakeeswarar temple in Tirunelveli.  It is believed the temples belong to the same age.
Praying to Mother Gomathi Amman offering vastras and Arali flowers – red flower garlands would cure those suffering from any illness and those fighting for life due to accidents, is the strong belief of devotees.  Joining the Navarathri pujas dedicated to Mother, would bring all happiness and prosperity to the devotee.
Theerthavari is celebrated for Lord and Mother on the Thai Poosam day followed by procession.  Devotees then offer their Kanikkai – contribution to the temple – of 10 measures of paddy or rice corresponding to the present scale of about 15 Kg.  This is called Nel Parai.  Nel means paddy and parai means the copper measuring bowl in the temple.  The paddy and rice are used for Ammadhanam-feeding.  This prayer is for more farm yields.
For safety and welfare of cattle, devotees perform Maa Kaappu to Nandhi in the temple on the Thaipoosam day.  There is a bowl with needle point holes and filled with holy water above the Shivalinga – Dhara Patra – from which water drops on the Shivalinga.  The temple conducts Homas on the last Saturday of each month.  Devotees join this puja for health.

  Temple History:
     
  Thiruvananthapuram region was but a forest in days of yore.  Sage Kara Maharshi installed a Shiva Linga here and performed penance.  The river also was named after him as Karamanai Aaru.  After the sage, a priest was doing all the pujas for the Lord.  Due to drought, the river became dry.
A voice spoke to the priest in his dream that the Shivalinga in the place had become very furious and it was time to soften its fury by installing an idol of Mother nearby.  An Amman idol is at the bottom of the Pottramarai tank in Madurai Meenakshi Amman temple and that should be brought and installed here.  The priest informed the king who in turn arranged to bring the idol and installed it near Lord.
There is also an opinion among scholars that this was the first idol made for Meenakshi temple in Madurai.
Sooner the Mother idol was installed, Karamanai river also began to flow with abundant water.  Drought and famine gave way to fertility and prosperity.  Lord was named Satya Vakeeswarar and Ambica brought from Madurai was named Gomathi, facing west.
