 Greatness Of Temple:

Lord is also praised as Irava Sthanathu Iraivan -  Irava-immortal, Sthanathu – place, Iraivan – God, place of Lord granting immortality.  A Brahmin Suvedhan by name came to know that he would die very young.   He worshipped Lord for longevity and succeeded.  Sage Markandeya destined to die at the age of 16, conquered Yama the God of death and his age is still 16 only.  Grandson of sage Salangaya with his worship of Lord Shiva became one among the Shiva Ganas.
The temple built by Pallavas is presently under the control of the department of Archeological Survey of India.  His Holiness Sri Kanchi Periaval was a frequent visitor to the temple.

  Temple History:

Sages rich with their intense penance approached Lord Brahmma the creator and expressed their desire for immortality.  Lord Brahmma advised them to go to Kanchi to realize their wish.  They came down to this place, installed a Shiva Linga, plunged into penance and realized their wish.  This place is known as Irava Sthanam.  Lord Shiva is facing east.  He is praised as Mrithyunjeswarar and Irava Sthanathu Iraivan.  Swetha Kulam is the sacred Theertha of the temple.  The reputation of Kanchi is mentioned by Saint Tirunavukkarasar as a place of boundless wisdom – Kalviyil Karayiladha Kanchi Managarm and as a city of beauty – Nakareshu Kanchi - by great poet Mahakavi Kalidas.
