The idol of Lord Mayuresa though originally small in size, the application of Sendhur by devotees during these years on the idol, It has become fat and large in size now.  This Sendhur is removed once in 100 or 150 years, when devotees could see the aesthetic beauty of Lord then. Such a darshan was available in the year 1788 and 1822, it is said.  There is also another Lord Vinayaka idol behind the presiding deity made of nice sand, iron particles and diamond power believed to have been made by Lord Brahmmadeva.
Devotees are advised to stay in this holy place for four days commencing from the Prathama day of new moon fortnight till Chaturthi - Prathama, Dwidiya, Trithiya and Chaturthi – undertake kshetra pradakshina  and worship Lord Nandadesa Murthy on the fifth – Panchami day for grant of Chathurvitha Purusharthas – Dharma, wealth, pleasure and moksha the salvation.  A view of the curve of the Kara River appears as that of a peacock.  Acharya Sankara had authored many slokas in praise of Lord Mayuresa.  This is one of the Ashta Gaya Kshetras praised by various Hindu communities of India – Bharath Varsha.

 Greatness Of Temple:

Ganapathya is one of the six branches of God worship – Shanmatha – established by Acharya Sri Sankara.  More means peacock and Gavung Village.  We call it in Tamil as Mayuresam.  According to scholars, Ganapathya philosophy began to be followed from this place only.  The Yogindra Mutt in this place is a classic library with treatises on Vinayaka worship.
The temple stands like a gem in the heart of this village facing east.  Two Deepa Sthambas greet the devotee to the temple.  There is a small room near these pillars, called Nagarkhana.   We can then see a statue of a rat holding the pudding, known as Kozhukattai in Tamilnadu. After going up a few steps, we can see a big Nandhi facing Lord Mayuresa Vinayaka.  It is strange that a Nandhi, the vahan of Lord Shiva is in this temple. The story goes as follows.
16 km far from this Mayuresa Vinayaka temple, is Boodeshwar Shiva temple in Yavadhi village.  They needed a Nandhi and got it made by a sculptor.  While carrying it to Yavadhi, on the way, the axle of the cart broke.  They placed the Nandhi on the ground while doing the repair work.  But nobody could lift and place the Nandhi in the cart again.  It is said that Sri Nandhikeswara told the cart man in his dream to leave Him in the place itself and go away so that He would be enjoying the darshan of Lord Mayuresa – Vinayaka.  The cart man and others dropped their efforts to take back the Nandhi to the intended destination.
The temple has four entrances.  Lord Lakshmi Narayana is at the eastern entrance, Lord Parmeswara with Mother Parvathi at the southern entrance, Rathi and Manmatha at the west side and Lord Varaha Murthy at the north are adoring the temple representing the four target benefits of life, Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha., known as Chaturvidha Pursharthas in our scriptures.   The temple has the statues of a number of Maharshis and sub deities, the most important among them are the eight Vinayaka idols, Eka Dhandhar, Mohodarar, Gajanana, Lambodhara, Vikatar, Vignaraja, Dhoomravarna and Vakrathunda in the eight corners of the temple.  There are Shami, Mandharai and Tarathi trees in the temple complex.  Devotees praise the Tarathi tree as Karpaga tree and perform Japas sitting under this tree.
Devotees offer their prayers first to Lord Nagna Bhairava in the temple as a tradition.  As in other North Indian temples, devotees are not allowed in the sanctum sanctorum.  Lord Mayuresa Vinayaka grants darshan to devotees with His Sendhur Alankara, and diamond gems fixed on His naval and eyes.  The full spread of the hoods of a Naga above the Lord is the umbrella to Him.  His consorts Siddhi and Buddhi are on both sides.  These idols are made of Bronze.  Mooshika (the rat vahan of Lord Vinayaka) and the peacock are before Him.  Coconut and Jaggery are offered as Nivedhana to Lord Mayuresa-Vinayaka.

  Temple History:

Sage Kathru had 13 wives.  Two of them, Kathru and Vinatha were always jealous and hated each other.  Instigated by Kathru, her son Adisesha along with other Ashta Nagas – snakes – Vasuki, Anandan, Thakkan, Sangabalan, Kuligan, Padman, Mahapadman and Karkodga waged a war against the sons of Vinatha.  Vinatha’s sons lost the war.  After some years, an Egg came out of the womb of Vinatha which she carefully guarded.  While praying to Lord Vinayaka, she placed the egg at His feet.  Lord scratched the egg with His nail.  A colossal peacock appeared from the egg.  It began to attack Lord Vinayaka.  Vinatha checked the peacock speaking to it the glory of Lord.   The peacock fell at the feet of Lord and begged His pardon.  Lord Vinayaka blessed the peacock to be His Vahan.   The peacock demanded that Lord should be named as Mayuresar including its name.  Lord granted this boon.  Lord Mayuresar on His peacock vahan entered the Padala Loka - a world below the earth – and released the sons of Vinatha kept captives there.  According to Mutkala Purana, Lord also released those in the cruel custody of Sindhuraja.
