Though a shiva temple, kalika parameswari shrine is ever over crowded with devotees.  After worsjipping raja  ganapathy, pujas are performed to mother at the rahukala time each day.  Mother appears with her eight hands to kill the demon with weapons on each hand and praised as ashtapuja (eight hands) kali, holding sword, armour etc.  Ashtalakshmi mandap is in front of kalika parameswari shrine.  It is noteworthy that nandhi the vehicle of lord shiva is before this shrine, as ambika is considered to be of a furious character.  The temple is maintained by viswkarma community people.

The tradition of rahukala pujua began from this temple only.

It is believed that the temple would have been built by viswakarma community people.   Mother kamakshi is the kula devatha of sculptors.  When they begin construction of a temple, they first draw a picture of mother kali.  There is room to believe that almost all temples in kumbakonam were constructed after installing mother kali only.  They installed mother kamakshi and lord ekambareswara  before taking up the building work.   It is also noteworthy that mother kamakshi is supreme here, hence, goddess alone visit the tank on the mahamaham festival day.
