 Greatness Of Temple:

The temple and the holy place around the triangular shaped Thidian Malai (hills) are considered one of the wisdom lands in this Kaliyuga.  It is believed that all the Gods are around this hill.  This is the only temple in Tamilnadu that has Lord Dakshinamurthi with 14 Siddhas brought from Kasi.  He is 2.5 feet tall on a Nandhi.  The holy tree Neikotta Maram is considered one suitable for worship by all belonging to the 27 stars.  Sage Agasthya is believed to have worshipped here on his way to south.

Those unable to visit Tiruvannamalai famous for Girivalam worship, do it here at Thidian Malai and reap the same benefits.  Hence, the place is praised as South Tiruvannamalai.  Those terribly obese, suffering from stammering, habitually speaking lies, facing other speech problems due to wrong pronunciation of Mantras are advised to bathe in the Pottramarai tank, worship Pechayi Amman and keep the polished stone (Koozhangl in Tamil) offered in the temple in the mouth and circumambulate the hill for total remedy from all these troubles.  They are well relieved of their obesity.  They are also advised to spread sand under the Neikottamaram, write the words ‘Dhyana Bhoomi; on the sand, place a soft cloth and sit and meditate to dissolve the extra body fat and become normal.

It is said that in those days there were a number of fat people (Thadiyar in Tamil) in the place, hence the place came to be known as Thadiyan Malai which later changed as Thidian Malai.  According to other story, a huge number of devotees flocked the place suddenly (Dhideer in Tamil) on hearing of the installation of the Kasi Shiva Linga here.  As this happened suddenly (Dhideer) the place came to be called as Dhideer Malai and now as Thidian Malai.

  Temple History:

Lord Sri Rama performed Ashwamedha Yajna after ascending the throne.  It was decided that a Shivalinga should be installed at every place where the Horse dedicated for the yajna relaxed.  The horse had a break near the Pottramarai tank near this hill also where this Kasi Lingam was installed.  Later kings ruling this region built the temple around the Linga, goes the story.
