 Greatness Of Temple:

Mother Gowmari is law for the people of this region.  Mother Parvathi was on penance in this place.  At the same time, ruler of Madurai Veera Pandian lost his vision in both eyes.  He fell at the feet of Lord Shiva for remedy.  Lord advised him to go and worship Mother Parvathi as Gowmari who was then on penance on the banks of River Vaigai in this place.  The king followed the advice with all devotion and got back the vision of one eye.  He prayed to Lord Kanneeswarar and gained the vision of the other eye too.  Only the water in the well of the temple is used for the abishek of Lord which is also offered as theertha to devotees.

  Temple History:

A demon then here was a terror to people, Devas and the sages in the Vaigai Vanam.  Mother Parasakthi made a Linga here naming Him as Kanneeswara and worshipping him.  The demon attempted to abduct Mother Parvathi.  Angry Mother took just a blade of grass and threw it on the demon.  The demon split into pieces and died.  The Devas – those living in the celestial world began worshipping Parvathi as a virgin deity naming Her as Gowmari Amman.
