  Temple History:

In days of yore, a Shiva devotee was ploughing his land.  At one stage, the plough did not move despite all his efforts.  When he dug the place, he found a Shivalinga of red sand.  He built a temple for the Lord there.  Udai means plough.  Hence, the Lord is named Udayeeswarar.  Mother Goddess is named Udayambika or Sukaprasavanayaki assuring pregnant women of safe delivery of the child and is installed in a separate shrine.
Nandhi the bull vehicle of Lord Shiva:
During the renovation of the temple, a Nandhi idol was found which was placed in front of the Mother’s shrine.  A pregnant woman, coming to the temple weary, leaned on the Nandhi which began to move softly.  The woman fell finally on the ground safely and comfortably, delivered a male child.  The Nandi became to be known as Sukaprasava Nandhi and the Mother Sukaprasavanayaki.
Pregnant women coming to the temple use to move the Nandhi slightly and those accompanying them place it again in the original place.  This custom is followed for safe delivery of children.
