Having five weapons in his hand and with his wives alongside Tirumal(Maha Vishnu)was sitting on snake bed. He was worshipped by celestials. To have a darsan of Lord Shiva, He, by climbing in His Vehicle Garudan went to Mount Kailas the abode of Lord Shiva. With the permission of Nandhi God, there He went inside. Garudan was waiting outside. Inside Lord Shiva with his three eyes, deer, axe, and abhaya and varadha hasthams  in his four hands(chathur pujam),konrai flower(Indian laburnum),and matted hair locks, was sitting on a navarathna seat in the form of Arthanareeeswarar. Having seen this sight, all of them worshipped HIM. Since Tirumal did not return outside, though considerable time has passed, Garudan tried to get inside. But Nandi god did not allow inside. Enraged by it, Garudan became angry and asked Nandhi god ‘who are you to obstruct me ferom entering inside, you are after all only a vehicle for Lord Shiva ?’. Garudan further told Nandhi god that he will him also if necessary. After hearing these words of Garudan, Nandhi devan made a deep breath and exhaled the air he breathed in. Garudan could not withstand the power of the exhaled air and faltered. Garudan immediately shouted saying ‘Oh, LordPlease save me.’ These words reached the ears of Tirumal who was having Shiva Darsanam(worship). So He requested Lord Shiva to pardon Garudan and release him from Nandhi. Lord Shiva ordered accordingly. He released Garuda who was almost in an half dead condition. Thus Garuda’s ego was removed and both Tirumal and Garuda went back to their abode Milk ocean. For having helped Garuda from the clutches or sufferings of Nandhi, Lord Shiva is called by the name GARUDAN ARUGIRUNTHA MOORTHI. This place known as Patteeswaram is situated on the way from Kumbakonam and Avoor. The Lord’s name here is Patteeswara nathar. Here the Nandhi is situated not exactly in front of HIM but slightly in a stepped aside position. The reason for this position of Nandhi devar is due to the request of Sambandar so as to enable him to worship Shiva without hindrance. Shiva here is tobe worshipped with Thumbai flower (called in English white dead nettle flower). Neivedyam is Ven pongal. Arcahanai and neivedyam are to be offered on Saturdays. As a result of this one will get fame, intelligence and wealth.
