IDAIKKAADAR  PINAKKU THEERTHTHA PADALAM: Kusela vazhuthi pandiyan, an expert both in literature and grammar was ruling Madurai. He is an expert in  creating  poems, equal to that of Sanga pulavars(learned persons of Tamil sangam{academy}. Once a friend of sanga pulavar Kabilar by name Idai kaadar wished to recite the poem written by him before the king. The king also asked him to come. Idai kaadar started reading the poem. The attention of the king got disturbed while he was listening the poem. In certain places the lines of the poem were worthy of appreciation. But the king didn’t appreciate even for name sake. In certain places when he was alert, he appreciated certain lines of the poetry which is not worthy of appreciation. Because of this Idaikkadar felt very sad. After the recital was over he left the place without informing the king even for courtesy sake. He went to the Meenakshi Amman temple and requested Lord Sundareswarar “O” God, I wrote this poem in the midst of great difficulty. But the king did not take notice of that and with utter negligence insulted me. This insult is not for me. He has insulted Tamil language, you the presiding deity and Mother Meenakshi. Lord, you should teach him lesson for the insulted heaped on you, Goddess Meenakshi and Tamil Language. You should make him commit mistakes in his poems for having insulted Tamil Pulavars(learned men). By making him unable to sit on the Sangam Plank(Palagai in Tamil) he should be taught a lessons and make him understand his mistake”  Sundareswarar decided to make the king understand the feelings of Idai kaadar. He asked Viwakarma, the celestial builder, to build a Hall on the southern bank of Vaigai river.  Viswakarma did the same. The Lord concealed himself in the Lingam there. Next day the temple gates of Meenakshi amman was opened .The priests opened the shrines of both Goddess and Lord Sundareswarar. On entering the shrines they were in for a shock. Those who followed him also had a shock.

Yes. In the sanctum sanctorum the idol of Meenakshi and the Shiva lingam were missing. They immediately rushed to the palace. On hearing the news the people also rushed to the palace. When the news broke to the King he was almost fainted. He lamented “Soma sundara, Chockkalinga peruman, sundareswara, Mother Meenakshi, what is this game? You who were inside when the gates were closed, now if not found there and absconded what sin have we committed? Did you not like us? What mistake have we committed? Have you can back to Mount Kailash? Have you can there to make a bow by bending Meru mountain? Or have you entered into the minds of your ardent devotees who adore you with love?”.At that time a few soldiers came there. They said “O” Great king, A new hall has emerged on the southern bank of Vaigai river. We were  surprised to see the images of Lord Sundareswarar and Goddess Meenakshi in that mandapam.   We came rushing here to iform you about that. On hearing this news the king along with the citizens went  into the direction where the mandapam (hall) is situated. He went inside the mandapam and said “O” Lord What is all this game? What is the reason for you and your to enter into this small hall leaving aside that big temple. If I have committed any mistake you should pardon me and come back to that big temple. I did not do any wrong ao any one. I am doing lot of charities. In your temple I am doing all renovations whenever it becomes necessary. Chockkanatha, if you don’t reply I will not leave from this place. He begged the lord with tears gushing out of his eyes. At that moment a divine voice was heard.

“Kusela vazhuthi, In this Madurai city there are lot of self propelled lingas are there. They were established by celestials, sages, Siddhars, and Demons. In these  64  lingas are of special significance and importance. Among these  64 lingas eight lingas were worshipped as heads for each direction. This linga out of that eight was worshipped Lord Kubera. Now I have selected this and has become one with it.” The king turned towards the God and asked”What is the necessity for you now to get into this lingam? The Mother Meenakshi also have come here. What is the reason?” The Divine voice replied to him “Pandiya King, You made a mistake. You have insulted my devotee as well as learned person (PULAVAR in tamil. I will not remain in a place where there is no respect for my devotee. When he recited his famous anthaathi(a f orm of tamil poetry) written by him you showed your negligence and ignored that. Do you remember that?” The king sought the pardon of the God. He begged the Lord “Yes. What I did was a great mistake and blunder. I accept that. Now I will arrange for a function to honour Idai Kaadar. Kindly excuse me”. The God told him that he had excused him. The God further said “ Now you may return back to the palace. I wil be here as well as in the Madurai temple. Here after this place will be known as Vada AAlavai.”  The King became happy once again on hearing that the God will reside in the Madurai Temple. With satisfaction he went to his palace. He brought Idai Kaadar and arranged a function to honour him. He begged the pardon of Idai Kaadar for the mistake committed by him to him. Later years a child was born to him. He named him as Aru maruththa Pandiyan. After the demise of his father he ascended the throne.
