Mayilerum Perumal Sastha in the sanctum sanctorum graces as Lord Muruga with vahans as peacock, elephant, horse and dogs. As Lord Muruga appears as Sastha, Sudalai (probably a guardian deity) also is in the temple. The reason behind Sastha-Murugan form is not clearly known.
There are some verses devotionally chanted by the devotees;
Oh! Mayilerum Perumal, please protect your subjects
You are in sweet environment with nightingale singing
On the palm trees in Varadarajapuram village irrigated
By Srivaikundam canals, you are on the north
Bless us with a determined mind on you.
You are among the dancing ferrtile fields
Nalangudi Perumal, we prostrate at your feet.
Those facing obstacles in marriage proposals perform pujas to Swami and Padala Kanni Amman and distribute fruits to visiting devotees. They also carry milk pots, do tonsuring and ear boring in the temple. People believe that Mayilerum Perumal is their constant custodian helping in fulfilling their wishes. Water is fetched from the canal of Tambirabarani river for abishek to Padala Kanni Amman on Panguni Uthiram festival day. |
