 Greatness Of Temple:

The temple is built of stones below the ground level.  The temple is known as Kundukkul Koil as there are 18 steps downward on south and east sides.  As in Kasi - now Varanasi, there are steps to reach the river from the temple.  There is also a pathway to Kalpathi River from the temple.
The place is revered as Half-Kasi as rituals are conducted here for the departed souls.  There is a golden hall – Kanaka Sabha for Lord Nataraja.  There are shrines for Shiva-Parvathi, Ganapathy, Nataraja, Sivakama Sundari, Pradoshamurthi and Muruga with His consorts Valli and Deivanai.  The car festival resembles the one in Mayurathaswami temple in Mayiladuthurai.
The temple celebrates 10 day car festival in the month of Aipasi – October-November.  There are three cars – raths-in the temple.  This rath utsav takes place simultaneously with Old Kalpathi Lakshmi Narayana temple and Sathapuram Prashna Ganapathi temple.  Lord Viswanatha and Mother Visalakshi come in procession in the first and big rath followed by Lord Ganapathi and Lord Muruga with His consorts Valli and Deivanai in the third.
As Mother Visalakshi is facing south, She has the power to relieve the devotees from fear of death.  Devotees perform Kumkum archana for removal of obstacles in wedding efforts, for child boon and longevity.  Mrutyanjya Japa is dedicated to Lord.

  Temple History:

An old woman, Lakshmi Ammal was residing in Kalpathi long back.  Other members of her family were in Mayiladuthurai.  She wanted to build a temple on the banks of Kalpathi for Lord Shiva as the one in Mayiladuthurai for Lord Mayuranatha.  She went to Kasi and brought a Bana Linga on a new moon day-Amavasya day.  She installed it in Kalpathi.  As desired by her, the king Ittikombi built this temple in the year 1425 and installed Lord Viswanatha and Mother Visalakshi.

Special Features:

Miracle Based: This is the only Shiva temple in Kerala that has a golden hall for Lord Nataraja. Navagrahas in the temple grace the devotees with their consorts.
