  Temple History:

Nandhideva, the Guard of Mount Kailas had two disciples Kandan and Maha Kandan to help him in His Shiva Puja.  While they were gathering the flowers, they found white lotus flowers in a pond.  When they were gathering the flowers, some of them fell on the bank of the pond and some in the water.  That fell on the bank became a parrot and those fell in the water became water beings.  Surprised, they continue to play with this mystery forgetting that time was running.  Nandhi Deva came to the spot.  On seeing the master, Kandan tried to hide as a cat and Mahakandan stood as a shivering thief.  Nandhideva cursed them to become cat and a hunter.  When they begged His pardon, Nandi said they had to go to a place southeast of Kanchi 5 Kadams far (a kadam measures about 10 miles according to some old scriptures), bathe in the Pundareeka theertham and worship Agatheeswara Mahalinga.  The curse will end at an appropriate time, said Nandi Deva.
Kandan and Mahakandan reached this world as cat and hunter and followed Nandideva’s advice.   One day, while the cat was performing puja, the hunter came and sent an arrow on the cat as it was a hindrance to his worship.  The arrow hit the not the cat but the Shivalinga.  It began to bleed.   They fell at Lord’s feet for a pardon.  Lord appeared before them and restored them to their original forms.  They begged the Lord that the place be known as Kiradha Marjalapuram – Kiradha-hunter, Marjala-cat.  Lord granted the boon.
