Greatness Of Temple: | |
Many religious centres are suggested in our scriptures for performing rituals for the ancestors including Kasi, Gaya, Rameswaram and other places. People choose one such place depending on their affordability for relief from the doshas affecting them from their pithrus-ancestors. One such is Kaavandandalam 20 km southeast of Kancheepuram on the banks of Cheyyaru River, a subsidiary of Palaru belonging to Prithvi part of the Panchabhootha sthalas. The river is dry except during monsoon. According to Puranas, the river was created by Lord Muruga. The place, once known as Kashyapa Dandalam is now changed as Kaavandandalam. |

Temple History: | |
Sage Kashyapa undertook a pilgrimage from place to place with his parents. He worshipped Lord Shiva in all temples on the way. As fate had it, his parents died on the way. After performing the last rites for them, collecting their Asthi, the sage continued the pilgrimage and planned to dissolve it in the Holy Ganga in Kasi. When he reached this place, he was happy of the green environment of the place on the banks of Cheyyaru and stayed here. He bathed in the river and spent the days in meditation on his Lord. Lord spoke to him in a voice advising the sage to bring His form from Mount Kailash and install it here and that he could dissolve the Asthi of his parents in Cheyyaru equal to the reputation of Kasi.
The sage was happy to dissolve the asthi in Cheyyaru and completed the rituals. He then went to Kailsh, brought a Linga and installed it here and continued the pujas. As the Lord was installed in the Solai-garden created by sage Kashyapa, He was named Solai Easwarar which now stands changed as Soleeswarar. |
