Temple History: | |

Going by history, it appears that Lord Idam Kondeeswarar was in Idai Marudur earlier. Lord Mahalinga Parameswara also praised as Aadhi Madyarjuna requested His elder to give Him space here which He granted. Since then, Lord is known as Idam –place, Kodutha – gave, Easwara – Lord. Saint Tirunavukkarasar had mentioned this event in his Thevaram hymns. The place has also mention in the hymns of other Saivite Saints. Sage Kachapa performed severe penance on Lord Shiva from the northern bank of Cauvery. A voice asked the sage the purpose of his penance. The Sage replied that he wished to have the darshan of Lord with Mother Parvathi in the Cauvery region. The voice said that his ambition would be fulfilled. The sage asked again about the timing of the darshan for the voice replied that there would grow Shiva Lingas in the place announcing the arrival of Lord and Mother. The sage waited. The Lingas began to appear on the Full Moon Day of Thai month-January-February. Lord Aadhi Madyarjuna-Mahalinga Peruman granted darshan to the sage on the Vrushab-bull-vahan with Mother Parvathi. As desired by the sage, Lord also granted darshan to the sage with Mother Bruhat Sundara Gujambika in wedding posture-Kalyana posture. The place came to be known as Tiru Kalyana Puram.
