	General Information:

	Lord Lingodhbava has his place outside the shrines of Mother Durga, Lord Brahmma and the sanctum sanctorum. His Lion Vahan is before the shrine of Amman. The Balipeeta is behind the Lion. It is more significant that Lord Kala Bairava and planet sun are on a straight line, so is planet Chandra-Moon.

	Greatness Of Temple:

	The temple has a close association with the history of Sundarar, one of the four saints of Saiva order. His wedding was interrupted and stopped by Lord Shiva with some blessing intention. This scene is in sculptured form above the Avudayar Sannidhi. Nandhi is behind the Avudayar, and Balipeeta is behind Nandhi. It is noteworthy that Sage Agasthya worshipped in this temple.

	Temple History:

	The place was earlier known as Puthur. After Lord Shiva stopped the wedding of Sundarar and took him in His devotee-fold, the place came to be known as Manam-Wedding; Thavirtha-avoided; Puthur = Manam Thavirtha Puthur. Saint Sundarar was born in the year 807 AD as the son of Sadaya Nayanar and Isai Gnaniar in the month of Avani –August-September under Uthiram Star. His parents named him Nambi Arooran. Later, enticed by the handsomeness of the boy, King Narasinga Munai Arayar of Nadu Naadu adopted him with the consent of his parents and thus Nambi Arooran became Sundarar. The King arranged for the wedding of Sundarar when he was 16 and obtained the consent of Isai Gnaniar and Sadayanar also. The bride was Kamalagnana Poongothai, daughter of Sadangavi Shivachariar, native of Puthur near the present day Panruti. An auspicious day for the marriage also was fixed. Puthur wore a festive beauty. Bridegroom Sundarar came in a procession with all paraphernalia in the street where the temple is situated. While the wedding rituals were on, an old man entered the scene with a roaring voice to stop the proceeding of the event. Everybody including the king and other gathered there was dumbfounded on hearing the angry noise. The old man approached Sundarar with a palm leaf in His hand and said that Sundarar, his grandfather and ancestors were His slaves and that he could not marry without His consent and therefore, he was guilty. Sundarar in his wedding dress retorted saying “Are you mad - Pithan” and demanded evidence for his claim. The old man showed a palm leaf as a document executed by Sundarar’s ancestors offering themselves as the slaves of the old man. But Sundarar simply tore the leaf without even reading it. The exasperated old man dragged Sundarar violently to Tiruvennai Nallur, His native place to prove his demand in the midst of a Panchayat. Sundarar also promised that he would marry only after conclusion of the case, if one such existed. He followed the old man. There is a Vinayaka shrine in the street. Though generally such shrines are facing east, Lord Vinayaka in this shrine is facing south with the purpose of witnessing the quarrel march. It is said that there was a tank here where the wedding dress of Sundarar disappeared. They reached Tiruvennai Nallur. The case was heard here. Sundarar lost the case and finally understood that the old man was no less a person that Lord Shiva Himself. Sundarar fell at Lord’s feet and begged for a word to begin singing His praise. Lord said, “Sundara, you called me Pitha (mad man). Begin your hymn with the word PITHA. Sundarar’s first Pathigam – 10 stanzas – thus began with the line “Pitha Pirai Soodi. Kamala Gnana Poongothat fell at Lord’s feet and sought His guidance for her future. Lord advised her to go on penance and reach His feet. The bride followed the advice and attained the Lotus feet of Lord. With the blessing of Lord, Kamalini and Aninthithai from Mount Kailash were born on earth as Paravi Nachiar and Sangili Nachiar and married Sundarar with the blessings of Lord Shiva.
