 Greatness Of Temple:

The temple is one among the five – Pancha Kadamba Sthalas.  This is the place from where Lord Muruga relieved Himself from the Veerakathi dosha.

  Temple History:

Daksha began a Maha Yagna with all pride ignoring Lord Shiva but invited all Deva with the willful intention of humiliating Him.  Though his daughter Dakshayani advised him again and again, Daksha was adamant.  Unable to bear the disrespect to Her Lord, Dakshayani fell in the Yagna fire and ended Herself.  Knowing the news, Lord Shiva deputed Veerabadra to destroy the Yagna.  The Devas who were silent about the wrong committed by Daksha had but to uncur the wrath of Lord Shiva.  Asuras the demons re-emerged and began to harass the Devas under the leadership of Surapanma.

Lord Brahmma along with Lord Narayana and crores of Devas surrendered at the feet of Lord Shia for freedom from the demons.  Lord Shiva created Lord Muruga through the sparks from His forehad eye for the destruction of Asuras.  Devout son Arumuga-Muruga set out to face and got the leaf shapped wepon from Mother Vel Nadunkanni at the place known as Chikkal.  Muruga destroyed the demons but had to incur the Veerakathi Dosha.  Lord Shiva suggested the Parikara pujas.

Acoordingly, Lord Muruga performed penance at Padarivana doing Panchalinga, Dwaralinga pujas.  Lord Muruga worshipped Mother Anju (Pacha or Five) Vattahtu Amman at Kilvelur, with a Vinayaka made of turmeric.  Secondly, He bathed in the Padala Ganga and worshipped Lord Kailasanatha.  Thirdly, He crezated Sivaganga spring and worshipped Lord Gangalanathar.  Fourthly, He worshipped Lord Viswanatha with Mother Visalaskhi and fifthly and finally, He worshipped Lord Chozheeswarar with Mother Soundaryanayaki in this holy place, Ilankadambanur.
