Backed by the event of King Sarfoji bathing in the Saketha Theertha (Neeraduthal in Tamil) with queen Yamunambal, the place was named Neeradumangalam which later changed as Needamangalam. This event, it is believed took place in the year 1705. Three rivers Vennaru, Korayaru and Pamani are running on the three sides of the temple. The Rajagopuram has three Kalasas. Balipeeta, flag post and a trident are on the north side of the Mandap. Deity Pechiamman is facing north. Maha Mandap has facility to accommodate 100 people worshipping at the same time. Lord Vinayaka occupies the centre stage in this square shaped temple. Maha Mari Amman grants darshan from the Saturn corner and Lord Kasi Viswanatha and Mother Visalakshi grace from the shrine in the south west part.

This Chola region under the flow of Cauvery river is praised by many names for its fertility and richness. Many poets had sung the glory of this region added by references in scriptures. The history of this temple begins from the Thanjavur king Prataba Simha and Maharaja Venkoji who established the Maratha empire then. King Prataba Simha had built two temples in Needamangalam and a rest house known as choultry. Temples of Lord Santhana Ramaswami and Kasi Viswanatha add further importance.

Tradition has it, that those aspired to learn the 4 Vedas prayed to Lord Vinayaka seeking His blessings to master the same and succeeded and named Lord as Chaturveda Vinayaka. The other reason is that the ripe woman poet of Tamil Avvaiyar offered four nivedhanas to Him to achieve excellence in Tamil poetry. The temple had been renovated by the people of this place and grew in size and fame in the years that followed. Maha Mariamman idol was found from the tank while cleaning. Amman is the Kuladevatha of number of families and is praised Mariamman temple also. The consecration of the temple was performed in the year 2002. The temple being in a square shape, Lord Vinayaka is named as Chaturveda Vinayaka (chatura in Tamil means square).
