When it was time for the heavy flood (Pralaya flood) that
would destroy the whole world, Brahmma approached Lord Shiva and asked
wherefrom He would have to start creating the world again. Lord Shiva advised Him – “Go to all holy
places and gather sand. Mix it with
nectar. Make a rare pot. Fill the port with nectar. Place the Shrishti Beej – creation seed in
the pot. Place a coconut on the
pot. Decorate it mango leaves. Wind the pot with thread. Place it safely so that it does not fall this
way or the other. Perform archana with
Vilwa leaves. During the heavy and the
destructive floods, Kumbah the pot would move towards South. I will be there.” Brahmma followed the instructions
meticulously. The pot floated on the
flood. The holy thread wound in the pot
cut off and became a Shivalinga. Lord came
to be known as Upaveda Nadeswarar. This is the holy place that relieves people from
Pasu Dosha – a sin caused by offending a cow.
Sage Gautama was living here then and was feeding poor people. Some mischievous tantriks wanted to damage
his reputation and created a magic cow.
Seeing the cow, the sage massaged the cow for its comfort. But the animal suddenly disappeared. Feeling that he had been responsible for the
disappearance the cow, Gautama worshipped Lord Upaveda Nadeswarar and got
relieved of the sin which he never intended to commit. Worshipped by Sage Gautama, Lord came to be
known as Gautameswara. |
