 General Information:

Tirpuvanam is 14 km far on the Madurai-Rameswaram highway.  This temple is near the Pushpavaneswarar-Soundaryanayaki temple.  Generally, priests use to close their mouth with a piece of cloth while performing pujas to deities of extreme furious nature.  The priests follow the system in Aadhi Gorakka Nathar temple also.  Sacred ash is offered as Prasad here.  If women seeking child boon take this sacred ash with water, they will get the child, it is believed.

The tamarind tree in the temple is 130 years old.  Gorakka Nathar along with his disciple Pattani Rowther performed penance sitting under this tree.  There is a board hanging in the tree, reading Pattani Rowther Sannidhi.  Gorakka Nathar performed penance here on Lord Pushpavaneswarar, it is said.   The temple has shrines for Gorakka Nathar, Pattani Rowther, Saptha Kannikas, Brahmmani, Maheswari, Indurani, Chamundi, Gaumari,Varahi and Vaishnavi.

 Greatness Of Temple:

Tirupuvanam is praised as little greater than Kasi Kshetra (Now Varanasi).  It also has the Jeeva Samadhi of Pattani Rowther who accepted the Hindu Siddha as his Guru.  This is the only place where Hindus choose Muslim names for their children.  The first child is named after Aadhi Gorakka Nathar and the second Pattani Rowther.  While Lord Shiva is prominent in Siddha temple, Lord Vinayaka occupies the sanctum sanctorum in this temple.  This is the only temple where Lord Vinayka is worshipped as presiding deity in Siddha shrines.

  Temple History:

Machendra Natha, an ascetic on pilgrimage from place to place came to Gorakpur and sought alms from a woman wife of a trader.  When she enquired about him, he said he was alone and had no likes and dislikes in life.  The woman told him that despite having a vast wealth, she had no child wealth.  The Sanyasi gave her the sacred ash and advised her to consume it with water and assured that she would be blessed with a child.
Bad luck had it that the woman shared her experience with other women who dissuaded her from consuming the sacred ash saying some Sanyasis are fraudsters and that she would land in trouble then.  The woman gave in and threw the ash.
12 years later, the ascetic Machendranath came to her house and expressed his desire to see the boy born to her.  The lady kept mum.  Machendranath asked the woman to speak the truth.  The lady said all that happened and pointed out to the place where garbage is thrown.  He went near the heap of garbage and cried Yogi, Yogi and the reply came, Oh! Guruji coming, coming.

Cleaning the spot, a young boy with such handsomeness and radiation appeared and fell at the feet of his Guru.  As he was in the womb of Mother Earth, Machendra named him Gorakkinath and walked away with the boy.  Trader watched and shed tears.  The disciple sought Upadesa of Sri Tharaka Mantra.  During his journey to Kasi, Gorakki Nathar met Pattani Rowther.  Together, they completed the Kasi Yatra and visit to other holy places.  They reached Tirupuvanam and established an Ashram.  Their blessings are echoing in the region
