 Greatness Of Temple:

The temple is known over the world for wedding prayers.  Any obstacle in the way disappears, it is believed.  Kalyana archana is very famous in this temple which the devotee performs both before and after marriage offering two coconuts, two garlands, turmeric, kumkum, camphor, betel nuts, lime fruit, sugar and sugar candy an important item in in marriage functions.

After worshipping at the shrines of all deities, devotees sit in two rows in the hall before Lord Kalayana Sundarar shrine, one seeking wedding boon, the other blessed with the boon.  The priest collects the puja materials from the devotees and performs the archanas.  He gives back garlands to the devotees.  Couples exchange it between themselves and to those awaiting marriage, the priest himself places it on the devotee.  The priest will then give instructions to the devotees as to what should they do next.

It is said that the lime fruit offered to the devotee ensures health to the devotee, the garland the happiness, vibhuti to bless his/her wish, kumkum the blessing of Mother Mahalakshmi and the turmeric all auspiciousness.  Devotees keep the garland in their houses with reverence.  They make juice of the lime and consume it the next day before food.  After the marriage takes place, the devotee should bring back the old garland and return it to Lord Kalyanasundarar and thus complete the course of worship.

Child boon:  Devotees come to the temple on new moon day.  Planet Raghu Bhagwan blesses here in full human form with ear rings and ornaments.  Milk abishek with milk porridge (Pal Payasam in Tamil) as nivedhana are offered to the deity.  It is believed that consuming this puja milk porridge would reward the devotee with a child.  After the birth of the child, male or female, devotees offer different anklets and a bell to the planet.  They also place contributions in the hundi.

Manmatha the cupid was burnt by the fire from the forehead eye of Lord Shiva when Lord was in meditation.  This happened at a place called Tirukurukkai.  He honestly realized his folly and sought the pardon of the Lord.  He was restored to life by the grace of Lord in this place.

Tirumananjeri enjoys special significance in the religious history of Tamilnadu as it is linked with the history of other Shiva kshetras.  Ambica came to Therezhundur as a cow due to a curse of Lord Shiva.  Lord Vishnu played shepherd in Komal.  At Tirukulambam Lord Shiva accepted a scar of the cow’s feet on His chest.  Lord Shiva granted salvation to the cow at Tiruvaduthurai.  At Tirundhuruthi-also called Kuttalam Mother Uma came from the yajna fire performed by Sage Bharatha.

Tiruvelvikudi, Kumulaipalai, Ethirkolpadi are the places where preparations for Shiva-Parvathi wedding took place.  At Tirumananjeri the grand divine wedding – Shiva Parvathi Kalyanam – took place, according to stories.  Tirumananjer is a place of marriage celebrations each day-Nitya Kalyana Kshetra.  This is also the place for Raghu worship.  He is in his full human form wearing ear rings and ornaments.  The sacred spring Saptha Sagaram (seven seas) is considered the garland that came for Lord’s wedding, according to beliefs.

  Temple History:

Mother Uma expressed Her desire to Lord Shiva that she wished to have another wedding occasion with him and enjoy the celebration pleasure.  Lord gladly agreed but was delaying the decision.  Displeased with His indifference, Mother too began to be indifferent with Him.  Angry Shiva cursed Her to be born a cow on earth.  Cow Uma wandered here and there in many places worshipping the Lord for relief.   Lord Shiva was cooled with the pouring of the milk of Cow Uma and also accepted a scar of the feet of the cow on His chest.  He agreed to marry Her again as she wished.  Mother Uma came in Her divine form from the yajna fire of Sage Bharatha.  Lord married Her at Tirumananjeri, according to Sthala Puranas.
