  Temple History:

There was a Lord Vishnu temple in this place.  Three Namboodri families known as Kilupuram, Kari Nadu and Karimukku were the priests of this temple.  Of them, Kilupuram Damodaran had no issues.  He went to Kollur Sri Mookambica Temple, stayed there worshipping Her seeking child boon.  Ambica appeared in his dream and said that he would not have a child due to his past Karmas and that he could adopt the child that would be born to his neighbour.  Returning back from Kollur, Damodaran begged the neighbour to give him the child in adoptation, but they said that they cannot part with the child till the next child was born.

Damodaran returned to the Vishnu temple with the umbrella he used in the journey.  He had a bath in the temple tank but could not take the umbrella back.  A voice said that he need not feel for the child and added that Sri Adi Sankara took the Mookambica idol and installed it in Kollur.  The power of Mookambica was set in his umbrella and advised him to go to the forest nearby where he would get a Saraswathi idol in child form.  Damodaran was further advised to install the idol of Saraswathi with the power in his umbrella.

He found the idol and installed it here as advised.  Since Damodaran Namboodri had no direct heir, his relations installed a stone as Saraswathi and are doing the worship for generations.  The devotee can see only the Umbrella.  Mother Saraswathi worshipped by Damodaran Namboodri is now inundated by betel plants and is not visible.

Saras means water and Vathi Goddess Devi.  Based on this philosophy, the temple is surrounded by tanks.  The Vishnu temple where Namboodris worshipped is nearby.
