 Greatness Of Temple:
A pepper merchant on his way to the shandy stayed in the temple for a night.  The temple servants asked the trader to offer a little quantity of pepper for preparing Nivedhana for the Lord.  He said that he had no stock of pepper and what was in the bag was Ulund dal.  When he went to shandy and unpacked the bundle, there was dal only.  The shocked merchant came to the temple and placed his dal before the Lord and begged His pardon.  It became pepper again.  Since then, Nerkuthi Vinayaka came to be known as Poyyamozhi Vinayaka, meaning that the Lord would not allow falsehood.
Vinayaka in Linga form: Lord Vinayaka is in the form of Linga.  His form would be visible only through abisheks in milk.  There are three banyan trees behind the temple without the hanging stems called vizhudhu in Tamil representing three Murthis – Brahmma, Vishnu and Shiva.  Those seeking wedding knot and child boon go round these threes.  Pujas are performed to the trees daily.
  Temple History:
Some shepherds of the region used to pick up paddy pads from fields, pound them with stone and used it to cook their food.  One day, when they sought for a stone, they got one that looked as the head of an elephant. They thought that would not help them to get the rice and left it there seeking another one.  When they returned, they saw the paddy pound, the husk and the waste separated and placed properly.  They wanted to keep the stone safe so that it would help in the work.
But they could not find the stone when they came there the next day  They found some bubble coming out of the temple water and searched for the stone in the tank and found it.  They decided that they should be more careful to keep the stone safe and tied it in a tree.  Meantime, the villagers found their paddy being stolen and reported to the head of the village.  Investigations revealed that the shepherds did it.  He brought the stone to his house.
Lord Vinayaka in the form of the stone appeared in the dream of the village head and told him that He was in the stone and added that he would become prosperous if he worshipped the stone.  As he was a Vaishnava, he handed over the stone to his brother who was secular in nature.  He built the temple.  All understood the grace of Vinayaka and named Him Nerkuthi Vinayaka – Vinayaka pounding the paddy .
