Of the many names attributed to Lord Shiva, Rajarajeswarar has special significance. This is one of 108 renowned Shiva temples in Kerala. The antiquity of the Shivalinga in the temple goes back to more than 1000 years.
Sage Mandhadha was gifted with a Linga by Lord Shiva in recognition of his penance and advised him to install it in a place where there was no cremation ground. Searching for such a place, the sage finally chose Thaliparamaba qualifying Lord’s advice. After the age of the sage, the Linga disappeared.
His son Musukundan followed the footsteps of his father, performed penance and got a Shivalinga from the Lord. After his time, that Linga also disappeared.
After a few centuries then, a king Sadasoman by name performed severe penance on Lord Shiva as advised by Sage Agasthya. Lord Shiva graced him with a Shivalinga in recognition of his penance which is installed in the temple built then. |
