In the year 1860, a resident of the place named Chinnavedi Chetty had a dream of the darshan of Lord Shiva telling him that there was a Shivalinga in a tope (a piece of land with many trees) and directed him to build a temple and promised prosperity to all in the location. Chetty immediately set out in search of the Shivalinga in his coconut tope but could not find it. Sitting sadly under a tamarind tree, he was scratching the land with a stick. He felt something while doing so, started digging and found the Shivalinga.
He decided to build the temple under the tamarind tree. He wanted to cut the tree as it was a hindrance. When he attempted to cut the tree, a Sanyasin came there and advised him not to do so. As Chetty could not find a suitable place, he went home sadly. He decided to take the Linga to his house. While digging, though the Linga just moved, it could not be taken out but only bent on a side. The man returned home sadly. As there was no alternative, it was decided to build the temple there itself.
Suddenly rain began to pour with thunder and lightning felling the tree to the root. No obstacle to build the temple now in the same place. The temple came up majestically. As He offered Himself, the Lord was named Swayambulingeswarar.
It is said that the Linga is growing taller day by day. |
