Unable to bear the tortures of the demon Soora padman, Lord Indra along with his wife Indrani was living in hide at Seerkazhi. There he was worshipping Lord Shiva. In between this, the celestials unable to bear the tortures came in search of Indra. Taking Indra along with them they reached Mount Kailas. Indrani was under the safe custody of Lord Ayyappa.  Mount Kailas, since the sanagathi rishis were having a detailed discussion on Yoga with Lord Shiva. So the celestials (devas) have to wait for a long period. At that time the sister of Soorapadman by name Agamugai along with her friend went to Seerkazhi.They asked Indrani to marry soorapadman. Since she refused they drew her along with them forcefully. On seein his Ayyappa waged a battle with them.For having tortured Indrani, Ayyappa cut their hands and sent them back. On hearing this, Banugopan son of Soorapadman started to avenge them. Then Soorapadman made the hands of his sister to grow. Then Banugopan went in search of Indra and his wife Indrani. They could not be located. Immediately he went to Indra lokam(indra’s world). Since he could find them there also, he waged a battle agaihst with Indra’s son Jeyanthan captured his elephant Iravatham and left.

In that battle Jeyanthan became unconscious. Because of this Iravatham fought with Banugopan. It also received blows and retreated back. Because of this Iravatham became very sad and went Tiruvenkadu. There it bathed three times in a day and prayed God. Because of this Lord Shiva became very happy and showed Himself to Iravatham. Then he removed all its demerits and made its tusks grow and made him the vehicle of Indra once again. Thereafter after slaying down of Soorapadman(soora samharam) by Lord Muruga, Indra returned back to his abode. The elephant Iravatham also went back along with him. The entire group of celestials were recovered. Since Lord Shiva pay heeded to the request of an elephant Iravatham, appeared before it and sanctioned all the boons requested by it Lord Shiva is being worshipped as GAJANTHIGA MOORTHI. He can be worshipped at Tiruvenkadu near Seerkazhi. The lord’s name here is Tiruvenkattu nathar. His consort’s name is Brahma vidya Nayaki. By taking bath at Agni, sun and Moon theerthams(Ponds) one after another and praying the Lord one one will get the opportunity for living in Indra’s world happily. By doing archana with Bilva leaves and offering Sarkkarai Pongal(sweet rice) all obstacles will be removed and will get victory inall ventures undertaken.
