Since the Manthira Malai (mountain) did penance, Lord Shiva with his consort came and syayed on that mountain for a few days. At that time a demon did penance invoking the blessings of the four headed Brahma. Brahma enquired him what he wanted. He replied that he can not be killed by anyone other than a woman born out of the body of Godess Parvathi. Brahma blessed him accordingly and disappeared. Then the demon stated giving torture to all. Unable to bear the torture of the demon, all the celestials went to Lord Shiva in group and requested Him to come to theie rescue. Lord Shiva thought of Kali and asked her to come. Kali came immediately. He told her the reason for inviting her. Kali devi was worried because of her dark complexion. Immediately Lord Shiva told her that her wish will be fulfilled  and her complexion will change when she becomes Gowri and sent her wishing her all the best. Immeditely Kali went to Himalayas and penance. To protect the celestials Vimalai was born as the daughter of the Mountain king in golden complexion. Then to explain her black complexion she became Durga. Then she rode on a lion given to her by Brahma and killed the demon. Gowri parvathi became golden complexioned because of Lord Shiva.

After the killing of the demon, she went to Manthirira Malai. She worshipped Lord Shiva. Immeditely Lord Shiva kept her on his lap. Parvathi devi who looked ar Lord Shiva changed her dark complexion (of Kali) and became Gowri with golden complexion. Thus by giving blessings to Kali and became Gowri her name is GOWRI VARAPRADHA MOORTHI. The Lord in the Ekambaranathar temple in Kancheepuram is called Ekambeswarar. His consort is called by the name Yelavar kuzhali. The main deity here is made of sand. Uma devi worshipped the lord by naking a lingam out of sand on the banks of Kambai river. By taking bath in this river, and worshipping the lord all types of eye diseases will get cured. By the efficacy of the water of this river all types skin diseases will be cured. On Fri days archana should be performed with Bilva leaves, neivethyam is offered with variety og fruits. Gee lamp should be lit. Because of these offerings there will be progeny in the family,the couples will have a long married life with mutual understanding and cooperation among them
