Both Tirumal(maha Vishnu) and Brahma were sitting on one of the highest peaks of Meru mountain. At that time a number of sages and celestials came there and worshipped them reverentially. They asked both Tirumal and Brahma amonf the two of them who remains in the minds of all creatures in the world. Both Tirumal and Maha Vishnu became egoistic on hearing this and a dispute arose between them that they alone remain in the minds of all creatures of the world. Seeing this all the sages and celestials left that place and gave a miss. The dispute continued even after they left, and at athat point Both Vedas and Pranavam told them that both of them are not great and only Lord Shiva is the greatest among all of them. They did not pay heed to these words and the dispute prolonged. Having come to know this, Lord shiva appears in the form of a Jothi(bright light) and showed them, the scene of both HE and HIS wife sitting in the Kailas mountain, in the centr of that Jothi. Having seen this scene, Tirumal bowed His head reverentially, accepted and praised Lord Shiva. But Lord Brahma’s ego did not subside and spoke bad about of Shiva through his middle head. Lord Shiva immediately remembered Bhairav to bring Brahma back to his senses. Bhairav came there and plucked the middle head of Brahma by his hand nails, carried it in his hands and went to the abodes of all ages and celestials and asked Blood Biksha(alms for blood). He woke up Brahma who became unconscious having given his blood also and thus destroyed his ego. He seek the pardon of Lord Shiva for having insulted him. Then He then sang several songs in praise of Lord Shiva. The removed head of Brahma remained with Lord Shiva. Hence Brahma got the name chathur mugan and Nan mugan (four headed).Since Shiva plucked the fifth head of Brahma with His hand nails, he got the name BRHMA SIRACHCHETHA MOORTHI. To worship him one should go to Tiru kandiyur. This place is situated near Tiruvaiyaru. The Lord’s name here is Brhma athar and His consort’s name is Mangala Nayaki. Take bath in the Brahma Theeertham(Pond). Do Bilva archana. By doing this Brahma haththi thosham will be removed and skin diseases will be cured.
