He being God, who has right and claim over the entire world, naturally every one’s wealth (money) do belong to him only. This is also just like worshipping Sun God with camphor arathi. All the wealth that we have were given by Baba only to us. In that, Baba for some reason or other is asking us to give some portion to him as dakshina. The devotees understood that Baba is claiming from us for this reason only. We make a small idol out of jaggery, Then we nip a small portion from it and offer him the same as Neivethyam(Offering), When Seshadri Swamigal Of Tiruvannamalai goes to a shop and throw away the items kept there for sale, there will be roaring business in that shop on that day. Because of this the shop keepers will be eagerly waiting for his arrival to their shops. Like wise the devotees were waiting eagerly for Baba to ask Dakshina from them. They believed that good things will occur if they offer dakshina when he asksfor the same.
Even otherwise they understood that Baba by accepting dakshina from them removes any evils that may occur to them. He will collect the burnt match sticks if he finds them lying on the ground and will put into his pocket. He considers both the money and burnt match sticks as one and the same. Did he collect the burnt sticks only to convey this fact to them? Or to convey the idea that this human body also one day will be burnt and become useless like this match stick and thus Life is not a permanent one. Who knows his mind? In the beginning Baba did not ask for dakshina from any devotee. But of someone offers voluntarily one paise he will accept the same and put it into his pocket without forgetting. If two paises were given he will look at several times and return it back to the devotee who offered it. Yogo Ram surath kumar used to tell that he is a beggar. Likewise did Baba also did consider himself as a beggar? Whether he considered that a beggar should accept one paisa only? These are riddles which no one can comprehend.
Baba used to buy oil for burning lamps from the money that he received. The question is that if he can burn lamps without oil and with water why should he buy oil for burning lamps? He might have considered that one can disobey the Nature’s law on special occasions but at all other times one should definitely obey the law of the Nature. He might have considered that he should obey the Law of nature which he himself had laid down. He daily begged for his food. So there is no expense as such for him.Even if he got money as Dakshina he did not personally benefit by it. He used to distribute the money he got as Dakshina immediately to the needy poor. Whatever amount he got on each day he used to distribute the same to the needy immediately next day morning he will get up as the same old poor Fakir only, At a later date Baba received thousands as offering. After his Maha Samadhi only few rupees were found in his possession. As per Indian tradition one should not visit a sanyasi or child or sick person empty handed. It is the duty of a Grahastha (Family man) to feed a Sanyasi and protect him. The child is not only the property of parents but also that of sociery. The sick may have unexpected expenses. So we are following the Indian tradition of handing over some thing in their hands when we visit them.
As per that tradition those who visited Baba brought Fruits, flower, or Sweets or money offering and gave it to him. Why did Baba distribute the money offered to him to the needy in the presence of those who offered it? To teach them that they should follow the dharma that he personally followed. Baba’s thinking was that the devotees by coming forth to offer the money which they loved, the attachment that they had on money should get reduced. Those who offered money to Baba reaped rich dividends. When Baba insisted on Dakshina with some and when they offered the same they got promotions in their jobs within few days. Those devotees who have experienced this, gave Dakshina to Baba whole heartedly and with joy. Ganapath Rao Patil has written his auto biography. He has provided several information about his guru Baba in that book. Among them one was about Baba asking dakshina repeatedly from him. Whenever the actor visited he should rebuke at him and get dakshina. He will distribute the money thus collected to the needy por.
More or less he emptied his money bag. But at a later date he accumulated wealth thousand times more than the dakshina he offered to Baba. He considered that Baba by removing his previous births sins(committed by him) under the guise of asking dakshina from him and thereby he could accumulate more wealth and become a rich man. There were occasions when baba vehemently refused with anger to accept dakshina when offered voluntarily by some devotees. Baba will be furious when someone brings and offers valuable Gold, Silver. He will not accept them. The devotee might have thought in his house to offer some amount first but later he changes his mind and then if he offers more than the amount the devotee thought in his mind before leaving his house, Baba will accept the amount originally thought by him in his house and not his revised amount. Some may not get opportunity to visit Shirdi and meet Baba and they will send the Dakshina amount through someone who visits Shirdi. That person visits Shirdi and meets Baba and forgets to offer the dakshina given by his friend. But Baba will remind the visiting friend about the dakshina given by his friend to be handed over to him and will get it. Once a woman named Mrs Tharkad came to meet Baba along with her husband. Baba asked from her the dakshina of Six Rupees. She shed tears at the thought of her not able to offer that amount. Baba asked her husband “You please tell her”. Having understood the thinking of Baba wht did her husband tell her?
