Lord Shiva was doing walking exercise in a garden in Mount Kailas. His consort Parvathi just went and stood behind him without making any noise and closed his eyes with both of her hands playfully. Immediately  all the living beings in the entire earth  suffered enormously. Because of that the whole world got plunged into darkness. Having come to know of this Lord Shiva opened his third eye  and protected all. Having received the light, all living beings ‘ sufferings came o an end and they become joyous once again as before. Every body praised Lord Shiva. Having heard this Parvathi Devi removed her hands immediately within a second. Because of this the sweat drops in her ten fingerd became ten Gangas . They spread in all the three worlds and caused great damage and destruction. On seeing this the inhabitants of the three worlds went to Lord Shiva and appealed to him.

Lord Shiva controlled he floods and kept it on the tip of his hair in his head. On seeing this all of them  praised and worshipped him. Brahma, Indran and Tirumal went to lord Shiva and told him that the ganga formed out of the sweat drops of Parvathi Devis both hands has become holy. Since you also have kept on your head the holiness has further improved. Yoy should give a little of that holy thing to all of us. Accordingly  Indran to Amaravathi town, Brahma to his Manovathi town and Tirumal to His Vaikundam took thr Ganga.

Since Lord Shiva has kept the Ganga on his head by keeping the force of its floods under his control he is known as GANGADHARA MOORTHI. To worship him we should to Himalayas only. Himalayas is the abode of Gangadhara moorthi. By gong their and worshipping him in our mind and take the Ganga water available there  back to our homes and sprinkle it in all places in our house then the whole place becomes holy. If we do archana to Gangadhara moorthi with jasmine (malligai in tamil) flowers and offer sweets made out of milk as neivethyam on Mondays during sandhya time we will get wealth and will be granted no further births in this world. By keeping this holy Ganga water in our house and worshipping daily  one will be assured of Lakshmi kataaksham(Godess Lakshmi will bestow all wealth to us forever).
