Once  a mouse raised the wick of the lamp burning in a Shiva Temple and made it glow still brightly. So Lord Shiva gave him the power to rule all the three worlds. That mouse became a king with the name Maavili and became a king of demons. On seeing the fast development of Maavili, the celestials(devas0 as a group fought with king Maavili. In the ensuing battle the demons won the battle. The Devas got afraid awnt to Tirumal and appealed to him. Thithi the wife of sage Khasyabar requested Tirumal that HE should take birth as her son and Tirumal agreed  and  took birth as her son under the Vamana. Though Vamana was a demon he became well known as one giving lot of charities  and doing lot of Yagnas. At this stage Maavili went to the palace of Vamanan and asked just to give him land . The extent and size will  be not more than three steps of his feet. The guru of Demons Sukra chariyar told Maavilli the person who has come under the guise of Vamana is none other than Tirumal himself. He told him not to agree for the charity asked by Vamana. Inspite of his warning  and without paying heed to his words Maavili agreed to him the land asked by him as charity. Immediately Tirumal incarnated as Trivikrama , took the first step by his feet and  covered the   entire  world and by the second step he covered the entire celestial world and asked him the place to put his third step. Maavili asked him to put the third step on his head. Vamana put his third step under his head and pushed him to reach nether world. (paathaala ulagam in tamil). Having destroyed thus Maavili ,Tirumal  with his ego arising out of this action teased human beings and celestials. The celestials became panicky and went to Mount Kailas and with the permission of Nandi devar, met Lord Shiva and informed him the whole matter. Lord Shiva requested Vamana to keep cool and calm.But Tirumal did not pay heed to his words. So Lord Shiva gave a severe blow on the chest of Tirumal with his Vajra Thandam( a form of weapon). Vamanan fell on the ground. He peeled the skin of Vamanan’s body and wore it as a upper garment. He removed the spine bone and kept it as a stick in his hand and thus removed the misery of Celestial. Vamanan told Lord Shiva  about the purpose of his incarnation as Vamanan and sought the pardon of Lord Shiva and left for Vaikunam. Maavili king also attained salvation(Mukthi in tamil). KANGAALA MOORTHI  form is the one in which Lord Shiva took the spine bone of Vaamanan in his hand as stick.
