Vaanasuran was the son Maha bali. He had thousand hands. His wife’s name is Supratheegai. He established an idol of Lord Shiva (sivalingam) and did archana daily to it one thousand times. Lord Shiva appeared before him and asked him the boons (varam in tamil) he wished to have from him. He asked Him to give the following boons. 1)To rule the entire world 2) Have a fort (mathil in tamil) made of fire 3) No death for him 4)Love of celestials. Lord Shiva sanctioned all the boons he requested for. Because of it he brought the entire world under control. He went to Mount Kailas once again to worship Lord Shiva. He played before him on a musical instrument called Kudamuzha. Lord Shiva asked him again what boon he wanted. He requested Lord Shiva to come to his place called Sonithapuram with his family  and reside reside there. Thereafter Lord Shiva along with his family lived there.

At this stage he called the entire celestial world for a battle and defeated them in the battle. All of them fled away from that place. So now he asked Lord Shiva himself to come and fight with him. Lord Shiva replied that Kannan(Lord Krishna) will come to fight with him in liew of him. Vaanaasuran  asked HIM when kannan will come. Lord Shiva replied that when Vaanasuran’s daughter likes Kannan’s son,  he will come on hearing this news. It happened like that only. Vaanasuran’s daughter fell in love with Kannan’s son. On hearing this news Kannan came to wage a battle with Vaanasuran. At the first Kannan worshipped Lord Vinayaka. At the second gate he worshipped Lord Murugan. At the third gate he worshipped Uma Devi and got her blessings. At the fouth gate entrance He saw Lord Shiva who invited him for a battle. Kannan hesitated. But Lord Shiva consoled and told him in his fight with Vaanasuran only Kannan will win. But before fight with me.A battle ensued between between Lord Shiva and Kannan. Nobody was able to predict when the battle will come to an end. At the end since Lord Shiva gave up the battle came to an end. Then a big battle took place between Kannan and Vaanasuran. At the end each hand of Vaanasuran was cut off. But only the hands that were used to worshipped were let off. With a change of heart Vaanasuran asked him to pardon him. The hands that were cut off rejoined again. Vaanasuran was employed to play the musical instrument Kudamuzha. The marriage of his daughter Usha with Aniruthan son of Kannan took place. In between the battle the seethala fever produced came down and the hot fever produced by Lord Shiva won within a second. It i.e., the hot fever had three heads four hands, nine eyes and three legs.
