  Temple History:

This ancient temple lies on the Kumbakonam-Nannilam main road.  There is a statue of divine poet Sekkizhar the author of Tiruthondar Puranam also praised as Peria Puranam in the nearby Lord Somanatha Swami accompanied by Mother Soundarya Nayaki temple.  It is believed that both temples are built by a same group of devotees.
When the temple was in a dilapidated condition, a land lord from Achutamangalam, Govinda Udayar began the renovation works and donated his fertile land to perform the daily puujas.  Destiny had it, that the noble soul breathed his last due to ageing.  According to records available, his son Sri Venugopalaswami Udayar continued and completed his father’s job and also performed the consecration of the temple in the year 1936.
An elephant called Gajendra used to visit the temple, picked up a lotus flower from a nearby tankand placed it at the feet of Lord each day.  One day, it was caught by a crocodile in the tank.  Elephant cried Achutha, Achutha.  Lord Perumal applied his discus, killed the crocodile and saved the elephant.  As it cried “Achutha, Achutha” the place came to be known as Achutamangalam.
