  Temple History:

There lived about 30 Adivasi families in Irularpathi a century back.  They were shepherds.  One of them was Ranga Moopan.  He used to graze his cows and was vending his milk.  He found that one of the cows gave very little quantity while others were giving more.  He wondered where and how the milk disappears despite good feeding.  He followed the particular cow that was heading to a Karai tree and found that it was pouring its milk on a Swayambu.  Exasperated, he beat the cow and drove it away and also brutally raised his sickle to cut the Swayambu who consumed the milk and left him in a loss.  But his hands and legs began to tremble and eyes darkened.  He fell fainted.  Hearing him crying in panic, the villagers came to his rescue and took him home.  After spilling water on his face, Ranga Moopan opened his eyes and narrated his experience.

An elderly person Thotti Moopan said that Ranga Moopan offended the Lord, took all the people to the place where the Swayambu existed.  All of them fell at the feet of the Swayambu and sought the pardon of the Lord.  Swayambu Perumal was pleased with their prayers and granted His full Vishnu darshan holding his conch and discus, a darshan even those in the celestial world could not have.  Lord Swayambu Perumal told them that He had come to the place only to grace them and their following generations and assured a prosperous and healthy life and salvation finally.  Lord, after granting the boon disappeared.   The villagers built a small temple then.  Ranga Moopan pledged himself and his heirs to the service of Perumal.
