Temple History: | |
During the rule of a Chola king of this region, monsoon failed, water sources dried up resulting in severe famine. The king prayed to Lord Vishnu to protect his subjects and restore prosperity with good rains. Lord granted the boon sought by the king and made the place prosperous. As a mark of his gratitude, the king built this temple.
There is also a Shiva temple nearby believed to have built in the same period to foster Saiva-Vaishnava harmony. To mark this understanding, the place has both the names of Shiva and Vishnu as Sankara Rama Nallur. Shankara-Shiva. Rama- Vishnu. To further the unity of the philosophies, Puja to Mother Vedavalli Thayar is performed with Vilwa leaves generally attributed to Lord Shiva. |
