 Festival:

As in Varanasi, a rath (car) is decorated with huge number of Laddus on the Deepavali festival day placing Mother Annapooraneswari for the darshan of devotees. The appearance of Mother in such an Alankara is very exciting. This darshan is available to the devotees after the morning abhisheks and pujas. Laddu is offered as Prasad to devotees. Mother also comes in procession in this Laddu car. Pujas are also dedicated to Mother Annapooraneswari, Lord Visveswarar and Lord Yoga Narasimha during the Pradosha time 4.30 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. Though special pujas are performed for Mother on full moon days and Fridays, Deepavali Pujua has greater importance. The 9 day Sarat Navarathri festival also bears more importance.

 General Information:

There are separate shrines for Annapooraneswari and Lord Yoga arasimha.  Lord Ganapathy welcomes the devotees at the entrance place inside the temple.  Mother Annapoorani in the sanctum appears with a Kalasa (pot) in the left hand and a spoon in the right hand, sitting on a diamond throne.  Five metal idols of Mother Durga and Lord Visweswara appear near the peeta.  Lord Vinayaka and Adi Sankara are on both sides of sanctum sanctorum.  According to scriptures, Lord Shiva punished Lord Brahmma by clipping one of his five heads when Brahmma’s pride reached its peak. The skull of Brahmma stuck to Shiva’s hand and thus He incurred the Brahmmahathi Dosha.  For relief from this dosha, Lord Shiva went to Kasi, now Varanasi and begged Annapooraneswari for food.  This is well depicted in the temple in a silver idol in the temple.  Lord Shiva appears in this idol wearing the tiger skin and holding the skull pot.  The temple is kept very neat.

 Greatness Of Temple:

Mother Annapoooraneswari is but the incarnation of Mother Parvathi protecting people from all evil spirits and effects.  She destroyed the demons to protect the innocent.  She made Varanasi Her Abode to remove poverty and starvation on earth.  The temple in this city of Coimbatore is assuming greater importance than Kasi-Varanasi.
Lord Shiva entrusted the responsibility of feeding the people with Mother Parvathi. To test Mother, Lord Shiva asked Her whether she had completed the job of feeding and mother said Yes.  Lord Shiva opened His sacred ash box, found an ant with a particle of food sticking in its mouth.  Lord was stunned.  Lord said  that  he had hidden the ant already from Her attention and that it was indeed a surprise to see it also fed.   Mother Annapoorani smiled and said that it was grace of the sacred ashes.  It is a luck that Coimbatoreans have this temple.

  Temple History:

Sage Kathyayana performed severe penance to have Mother Parvathi his daughter on earth.  Parvathi wanted to amend for Her mistake of covering the eyes of Lord Shiva once, took this opportunity and was born on earth.  She was named Kathyayani.  She was very kind to all the beings.  When she heard that famine was engulfing Varanasi killing people by starvation, Kathyayani went to Kasi and saved people and assumed the name Annapooraneswari.  King of Kasi came to Mother and begged Her to return to his place.  Mother politely denied his invitation, granted him Herdivine dharsan  and preferred to stay back for the services of the poor.  King of Kasi had but to yield to the wish of Mother and begged Her to stay in his capital for ever which She granted. All of us know that Mother Annapoorani is the sole food giver to all beings and it is the great boon to people of this city to have this temple for their daily worship.
