Mondays, Fridays New Moon and Full Moon days are the usual important days in the temple with abisheks and pujas dedicated to Mother Amman. The most important festival, 9 day Vaikasi Thiru Vizha (May-June) begins with planting of a post – Kambam installing. Every day, the Alankaras for Amman would be different with special pujas as Muniappan Puja, receiving Mother Amman, Wedding Shakti Karakam, Abhishek with turmeric water and Madurai Veeran pujas. Each year, devotees make clay dolls depicting Madurai Veeran accompanied by Puthia Pattatharsi Amman, Vellayammal and Bommi Ammal and worship him. They remove this clay idol placed at the entrance of the temple next year and replace it with new ones. He is custodian deity of the temple. Carrying Shakthi Karakam is the main part of this festival. Those carrying the karakam use to punch their cheeks - Alagu Kuthal – and also carry milk pots and firepots called Poochatti. Along with traditional Nadaswaram, it is accompanied by folklore musical instruments beginning from Oor Gounder thottam. They dance to the tune of the music keeping the Karakams on head quite artistically. |

Temple History: | |
|
|
|
|
This is a 150 year old temple noted for its peaceful and
divine environment free from any pomp and splendour. It has no priest chanting Mantras. A Pujari
performs Aarati at scheduled times. Mother
Pattatharasi Amman is believed to be incarnation of Mother Parvathi. In days of yore, people installed Amman under the Arasamaram
tree along with other sub-deities. Madhi
Chinnan was a rich farmer owning a vast land where he cultivated paddy,
plantain and Sugar cane. A cow and its
calf entered his fields and destroyed the crops. Madhi Chinnan during his visit to the farm
got wild and sent an arrow which injured the calf causing unbearable pain. It was the cow that gave its milk for the
Shiva puja.
The cow went to Mother Parvathi and shed tears. Mother sent a message to Madhi Chinnan that
She would be present there and Chinnan was ordered to erect a Green Pandal with
Karakam. He did and was waiting for Amman. Mother Parvathi appeared there with Her sword
terribly indignant and destroyed the family of Madhi Chinnan. His brother ran away and hid himself in
Arasani Kadu. He surrendered at the feet
of Mother Parvathi and begged for life in all humility. Amman advised
them to install Madurai
Veeran with all sub-deities under the tree.
She also said that as they did not know Mantras etc. they should be
simply devout and that She would protect them from evils when they call
Her. The pujari said that the 7
Nattakkal (7 stones) were deities Mari Amman, Dandumari, Ellai Mari, Muthumari,
Shakthi Amman, Thavittu Mari and Karumari.
