While one Manickam was watching his harvest during a night, robbers came there to attack him.  He called Aiyanar in a loud voice for rescue.  Ayyanar immediately came to his rescue and protected him from the robbers.  People of the place praised Him as Manickam Katha Aiyanar.  The name of the deity came to be known as Manicka Ayyanar.  The temple is 300 years old.  After construction of a temple, the last consecration was performed in the year 2009.
