 Greatness Of Temple:

Sri Annappa Swami in the temple is regarded as the representative of all Justice Deities and root source of the reputation of the temple.  He is the head of the daily feeding conducted in the temple.  Lord Manjunatha Swami blesses the devotees from the sanctum sanctorum in a big Linga form.  Procession deities are on both sides.  There are also shrines for the Justice Deities.  Sri Kumaraswami and Kaala Rahu are in the shrine of Mother Kanyakumari.  The procession deity of Kanyakumari Amman is in a central place here.  Lords Lingoghbava and Maha Ganapathi are behind the sanctum sanctorum.  The shrine of the Ishta Devathas is in the northern corner of the prakara.   About 10,000 people are fed in the Annapoorana choultry each day.

It is noteworthy that Mr. Hegde is respected here as the present representative of Lord Manjunatha Swami hearing cases.  He calls both parties and gives an opportunity to both sides to present their cases.  He makes a best and mutual compromise between the parties and where necessary he also gives his verdict.  Parties are happy to accept his decision.

There is a beautiful garden, a tank and Lord Annappaswami shrine opposite the temple.  The revenues of the temple are used for running schools, colleges, hospital and a home for the aged.  No charge is levied for conducting marriages in the temple.  Except affordable contributions in the hundi, the devotee need not spend any money in the temple.

  Temple History:

About 1000 years ago, the place was known as Kudumapuram.  One Paramanna Hegde was the head of this place.  One day, a few people with a divine personality arrived at his house Nelliadu Beedu in horses and elephants.  Hegde received them with all warmth and offered sweet water to quench their thirst.  They told him that would like to make the house their home and asked him to shift to some other place.  Hegde, known for his philanthropic traits immediately began to remove things in the house to offer the house to the visitors.  The visitors told Paramanna Hegde that they were coming from Lord Maheswara, could do miracles and wanted to make the place very holy.

The visitors directed Hegde to build a temple for Mother Kanyakumari and also Lord Manjunatheswara Shivalinga brought from Kasi.  They said that the Linga was in a tank in Katri near Mangalore.  That Linga also should be installed in the Kanyakumari Amman temple.  Every one coming to the temple for worship would go back with all their wishes realized.  Money would flow and that Paramanna Hegde would be their representative and spend the money for all charitable purposes.  Saying that they would take care of him and guide in the mission, the visitors disappeared.

Paramanna Hegde meticulously followed the instructions of the divine visitors, built the temple and installed Mother Kanyakumar and Lord Manjunatha.  Contributions flowed in which Hegde spent them scrupulously for all noble projects.  His heirs are following his footsteps very sincerely as the custodians of Dharmasthala and as true representatives of the Justice Deities-Dharma Devathas.  People respect Sri Veerendra Hegde, present chief as speaking Manjunatha Swami.  His words are taken as gospel truth.
