 Greatness Of Temple:

Lord Mahavishnu made a compromise with Lord Shiva here to effect His reunion with Ambica.  Based on this event, elders in families meet in this temple to effect re-union between couples separated for some reason or other.  Also marriage engagements are conducted in the temple in the faith that the couples would have a harmonious marital life.
Lord Perumal-Lakshmi Gopalar graces from the sanctum sanctorum in a standing form with Mothers Sridevi and Bhoodevi.  As Perumal chose this place to stay, it is said that Mother Mahalakshmi also stays with Lord but without a form – Aroopa.  Lord also is named Lakshmi Gopalar.  It is the faith of the people that praying in the temple would bring in prosperity – Lakshmi Kataksham – to the family.  Sage Vasishta had worshipped Perumal in this temple.

  Temple History:

The history of the temple has a close link with that of Lord Shamba Murtheeswarar temple.  Daksha, father of Mother Parvathi organized a yajna without inviting Lord Shiva his son-in-law with a view to humiliate Him.  Though prevented by Lord Shiva, Mother Parvathi went to the Yajna place and fought with Daksha for his arrogant behaviour.  But angry Shiva left Parvathi, came down to this place on earth, sat under a Vilwa tree meditating for peace of mind.  Parvathi came to this place along with Her brother Mahavishnu and begged the pardon of Lord Shiva.
Lord Vishnu spoke to Lord Shiva for His sister and succeeded in making a compromise for the reunion of the divine couple.  Lord Shiva took back Mother Parvathi and stayed here as Linga.  Lord Vishnu too chose to stay here near the Linga according to the Sthala Purana.
When a king built a Shiva temple, Lord Perumal told him in his dream that He too was here.  The king built the Perumal-Lakshmi Gopalar temple also.
