The river Manimutharu starts at Salem and runs through Paramathi Velur and joins the Cauvery at Nanjai Idayaru village. There five Shiva temples on the banks of this river – Sukavaneswarar in Salem, Karapuranathar in Uthamachozhapuram, Veeratteeswarar in Pilloor, Bheemeswarar in Mavureddi and Tiruveneeswarar in Nanjai Idayaru. Worshipping all the five temples simultaneously is considered a great luck bringing showers of benefits to the devotee, according to belief among the people here.
It is the staunch belief of the people that worshipping Lord Bheemeswara especially in times of drought would bring good rains and restore fertility to the land. |

Temple History: | |
Lord Bheemeswarar temple is the fourth on the banks of Manimutharu river. Pandavas faced a severe famine in Hasthinapur once and were suffering without food and water. The story goes that they appealed to the Divine Sparrow for a solution when a voice from heaven said that they should travel towards north and bring a Purushamirugam – an animal in a man form – to the land for rain and fertility. They proceeded accordingly.
But the animal attacked them ferociously. They began to run for escape. When they reached the Manimutharu region, Dharma made a Shivalinga, installed and worshipped. The animal, also a Shiva devotee came around the Shivalinga in devotion. To escape the fury of the animal, all the brothers made a Shivalinga in nearby places and worshipped. The animal also joined the worship and calmed down. The Linga installed by Bheema in Mavureddy came to be known as Bheemeswarar and the temple as Beemeswarar temple. |
