Meenakshi Amman Temple
Thousand Pillar Hall

Thousand Pillar Hall

The temple's most famous hall, now its art museum.

Period
16th century

Despite the name, the pillar count is slightly under a thousand. What makes the hall remarkable is that each pillar is an individually carved figure rather than a repeated pattern. It houses the temple art museum today, and the musical pillars outside sound a different note when struck.

Highlights

  • Temple art museum
  • Musical pillars
  • Individually carved pillar figures
